There is nothing it symbolizes that makes Egyptians proud. Egyptians are mostly Muslim with approx. 10% Christian. The Sphinx is a pagan symbol associated with the pagan Ancient Egyptians. As Mahmoud has confirmed, there is no connection at all with Islam. I must say I find this question and your last question regarding Muslim women learning to belly dance before marriage quite offensive. Why don't you educate yourself a little before posting such questions here?

It was the Pharoah's strength in stone. If invaders were trying to approach the city, then they would be intimidated by the Sphinx. Think about it in this manner: You are approaching a strange new city and you are hoping to take the city over. What would you think about seeing some huge, monolithic "Pharoah" looming over your path of entry? You'd be pretty freaked out, right? That, was what the Sphinx was all about. It was used to show the Pharaoh's might and power.
