It's very very loosely based on Ed Gein who, In the late 50's in Plainfield, Wisconson dug up graves of women over a 10 year period. Like leatherface from TCM, He dressed up in womens skin and did other gruesome things, He also murdered 2 women, However, he did not use a chainsaw. Also, it was just him, not a family. the book and movie, Psycho is also loosly based on gein. From IMDB.....
The true story of Edward Gein, the farmer whose horrific crimes inspired Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs. This is the first film to Gein's tormented upbringing, his adored but domineering mother, and the 1957 arrest uncovered the most bizarre series of murders America has ever seen.

It's true... to a certain extent. Some of the movie was based on knowledge of the story. He didn't use a chainsaw. He was known to have killed @ least 2 peeps. See links below. Exercise caution when checking out da links tho... You might not wanna read everything or know everything.. I know that I sure don't !!!

well there's all ways a way 2 read the back of the movie, if you got it. it should have people you could contact to interview your self, one time I needed a person to interview on being an animator, I was given the creator of cars adress, I never wrote him because I needed an e-mail for faster results. so maybe they might have a contact adress of some sort behind the movie? I was told that it was a true story, that's what made it so scary for others. I don't know, I don't think it was scary, but that's me. I take the scary films and thing that its actually some sort of mystery. police bio, or something other than horror. I don't know. somethings wrong w/ me... lol it's 1 thing 2 be scared of a movie and another to be paranoid of what could end up like in the movie.

I think its based on a true story (like the amityville horror), the real part are probably a family that kills a group of hippies, I bet the stuff about them wearing skin is fake.

It's loosely based on Ed Gein a serial killer who made masks and suits out of dead people. He only killed two people really and didn't use a chainsaw. He liked to dig up dead females (including his mother). He also inspired the Norman Bates character in Psycho.

I think it is loosely "based" on a true story. But, the movie is not like a documentary or anything.
