In a word - Octane. The higher the octane the more "heat" it takes to ignite the fuel. Regular has the lowest octane whereas supreme has the highest. The ONLY reason why you would need the "higher" octane fuel is because you have a HIGH performance car. So, if you don't drive a BMW or Corvette etc. you don't need supreme.

The difference is the octane rating. The two higher grades have ingredients that increase the volatility of the air fuel mixture.

Note however that all regular production cars are designed to run on regular. Buying the higher octane grades doesn't make the car run any better, in fact some run much poorer.

Some luxury cars and a few high performance cars do use super.

Wedge, Wulfman has a very good point. I got a Chevy Silverado from one of the boys in my company. When I did they were burning Mobile in it. I had some things upgraded on it, had alot of things replaced and it runs great. Now one day while I was on a project in Maryland I was low on gas, about empty. I went to a Shell Station and put the Mid grade in the tank. I hit the beltway and after 10 minutes the truck just opens up and is moving! I mean like the Monte carlo ss my dad had ! I knew it was the gas and I havent changed back to gas ever since. I go to the shell station for fuel now and its been 2 years since I made this discovery. Anybody can get gas and regular too but if you want to move ...Get Shell and you will.
Also I put Dura lube gas treatment in and it cleans the fuel injectors out. 1 bottle to a tank of gas every no and then and you will know the difference in excelleration .

In most cases your car will have something on the dash or the gas cap which will tell you what gas to use. most cars will use the regular with the exception of some hi performance cars. The difference for the most part is price. will your car perform better with the higher priced gas. Probably not. When you change your oil it is recommended that you use some kind of fuel injector cleaner...use it with a full tank of gas. Other than that the regular gas is normally acceptable for most cars. One more tip...before buying gas...ask the station if they had thier supply tanks filled that day. If so don't buy gas there...as that mixes the water that is in the storage tanks and will hurt engine performance. Also in the winter this is especially important as water will freeze the fuel lines. between oil changes use a product such as heat just in case. this product will dissipate the water and keep your car running well.

Hope this helps you

The differenceis in the octane rating : regular is 87 octane, plus is 90 octane and supreme is 93 octane. Octane is the unit of measurement for how fast the fuel burns. Use the lowest octane that your car will run without knocking. If you have a high performance engine they need the higher octane, most all cars run on 87 octane.

Octane rating.

Some cars are built for higher octanes, and you can't put less in it. These are your high performance cars...the vast majority you can put the lowest octane in and it doesn't hurt at all.

Octane rating is also directly proportional to altitude. The low-lying states have a low octane rating of 87. Higher elevations states have an octane of 85 (on the low end) usually.

EDIT: I had it backwards on the elevation thing...sorry. Just got back from the pump. Duh. Ok, low-lying states have lower octanes available, while higher elevation areas have higher octanes available. I fixed it above. Sorry about that.
