Dog - I love reptiles but dogs are able to bond & show affection to their owners unlike any reptile.
Plus Iguanas require speical care that most people either can not or will not provide.

iguanas can get really big and get mean. They actually live longer than most dogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iguana). Their food is pretty specific and it's not easy to find and iguana-sitter.
If you want a lizard, I'd get a leopard gecko. They're really cool but they only get to be 6-9'. They don't need as much care as either a dog or an iguana.
Dogs need to be walked several times a day and need a lot of attention.
I would really read a lot about both animals before actually getting a new pet. Also you can make a pet budget, like how much is the pet itself? Its Terrarium or Dog bed, kennel? How much do vet visits cost? Which vaccines will your pet need? How much does your new pet's food will cost, per day, per year?
Personally I'd go for a gecko!

Just rememeber, a well cared for iguana can live 20 years, much longer than most dogs. Lots of people will take in a dog if your lifestyle changes and you can't have it anymore. There are not as many iguana lovers out there, especially when they get big. I have an 11 year old iguana, he is large and I have trouble with getting people to ig-sit when I go on vacation, and he is pretty docile (except in mating season). Also, igs eventually need lots of space and special lighting, as well as clean-up, they poop pretty big when they get older. Mine can beg for food but they don't do many tricks either, mostly they just hang out and act like you aren't there. Dogs are more appreciative.

Well since you already killed 1 iguana from inadequate care, i suggest you not get another one.
Iguanas are very high maintenance and dogs are too.
Atleast with dogs you dont have to worry about specific types of lighting and stuff.
However dogs are high maintenance too, they cannot be just tied up in the yard, they need daily attention like walks, playing, good high quality premium food, regular veterinary care, daily teeth brushing, and you will need to dog proof your house so they dont chew stuff up. Never ever buy from a breeder, always adopt from a shelter or a rescue. Make sure the dog is either spayed or neutered and has its vaccinations.

If you don't know, I suggest you don't get either.
An iguana is something to look at, a dog is something you 'marry'. (I don't mean it that way, ladies.) You have to bond and play and do things with a dog. IF you don't, it's not your dog. One is an accessory, the other is a responsibility.

both require food, exercise, and attention...an iguana can grow to become enormous and you would have to cage off 1/2 a small room and walk it with a chain..a dog is more loveable and more maintenence...I had a baby iguana, cutest thing in the world, but like I said, they can get quite large...i would research both and perhaps that would assist you in making your decision

Get a BIG iguana, and a small dog. Put them in a room together and keep whichever survives.

depends how much money, free time, living space, etc etc etc you have. Iguanas do make good pets. they are fairly low maintaince. dogs are huge responsibilites but make great companions and a lot of fun, but tons of work. If you have the money and time, go for a dog.
