There is no law regarding lane splitting. Cops allow it because it isn't against the law.

Although lane splitting is legal, someone who slices through bumper-to-bumper traffic with reckless abandon stands a good chance of getting a ticket if the cops catch up with him or her.

``The issue that we look at is the speed at which it occurs,'' Kroeger said. ``The question is, at what speed does it become unsafe? That's up to the individual officer to decide. It depends how fast traffic is going at the time.''

Not everyone follows it, but the general rule of thumb among motorcyclists is to stick to the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes and go no more than 10 or 15 mph faster than traffic when lane splitting. Anything more, many said, is asking for trouble.

Many motorcycles are air cooled, meaning they have to keep moving whenever possible or burn the engine. Short stops for red lights are no problem, but freeway stop and go traffic would kill it.

In California, it's legal to pass between two cars if you don't cross the white line while passing. It's called "sharing" a lane.

Most riders DO cross the line though, as this is the SAFEST way to do it.

Really irks drivers in cars, RIGHT?

It's legal, maybe because why should they wait if they can get through?

I was suprised when I saw that too, Cali is the only state to my knowledge that allows that.

When I went to design school in SoCal, it was LEGAL to lane split. I think it's a brilliant idea. More states need to adopt that law.
