To encourage participation and reward great answers, Yahoo! Answers has a system of points and levels. The number of points you get depends on the specific action you take. The points table below summarizes the point values for different actions. While you can't use points to buy or redeem anything, they do allow everyone to recognize how active and helpful you've been. (And they give you another excuse to brag to your friends.)

Levels are another way to keep track of how active you (and others) have been. The more points you accumulate, the higher your level. Yahoo! Answers recognizes your level achievements with our special brand of thank you's!

And finally, as you attain higher levels, you'll also be able to contribute more to Yahoo! Answers - you can ask, answer, vote and rate more frequently.

(I am not doing an advertisment!)

You get three points back for choosing a best answer. You have a point, but I think it just encourages participation, and that people give more answers than ask questions.

At levels 1 and 2 I felt the same. Now (level 4) it's meaningless. Just answer some stuff and it'll all turn out ok.

It's just as crazy as it is to automatically give two points to anyone for "answering" a question when the answers don't have to be relevant at all!
For instance, I could've simply typed in FISH here and, bingo, two more points.
Ah me!

You're only losing two points, since you get 3 points back for choosing a best answer.

Its really so ANNOYING. I'm trying to get to level 2 But i dont just coz i lose marks because of questions. So now i never ask them. Maybe they deduct marks so that u never ask meaningless questions.

I think it should be related to the relvence to the questions..If Y! decides that is a decent question then maybe you should receive say 3points. But if its another question dealing with atheists vs. christians or "Am I cute?" then it should be deducted...in my opinion..

I think maybe that was a way of trying to avoid so many nonsense questions!
