Trust your instincts. It is very unwise to behave in another way that what your gut feeling tells you. In the end you will have the feeling your "acting" all the time and keep everybody happy. It is never possible to keep everybody happy. Just do what you feel is right.

1) Be polite & respect everyone.

2) While at work, do what your boss asks you to do - you are not
working for those others & they don't sign your evaluation or
hand you your paystub.

3) Go to lunch with whoever you like.

4) Try not to worry about office politics. When you go home, leave your work at work.

5) Remember why you are working there in the first place.
You are probably going to have many jobs in your life.
whatever you learn here can help you in the next (as can a
supervisor's recommendation)

Good Luck!

your boss is a controling jerk - like so many. but he is the boss. you can suck up and just be friends with the other guys outside the office or you can continue to socialize and take your chances that he will find a reason to fire you. are the other guys - "guys"? and are you female? if so he might have the hots for you. then you need to decide if you want some guy controling what you think because he likes you. i think not. there are other jobs and they are probably better!

Stay away from the guys in other cubicles. Your boss knows what these other guys are like, he has probably heard them talking about 'getting' the new girl, and he sees that you are vulnerable at the moment. He is the one who hired you and he did so for a reason- assume he has your best interests at heart. Don't trust any guy at work further than you can spit (on a personal level).

If you're talking non business talk, then he would be right to discourage you from talking to them. You're not there to socialize, but if it's business talk, then you may need to explain to your boss that you were asking them a question about whatever, or talking to them about whatever. I don't think he can forbid you to speak to the others. If all else fails, you may have to start looking elsewhere for a job because there's no need to be miserable and feel like you're being watched all the time. I had a job like that once and I know what you mean!

My advice is simple - Don't get involved in politics -

Under no circumstances - say anything derogatory about your boss to your colleauges as their are allways dissenters who will pass on your feedback.

Stay neutral - and have a good word to say about everyone

Good luck

You are new. Don't get involved in office politics & at lunchtime, steer the topic go other (more pleasant) things if possible because the politics can be hazardous to your job. I agree with wikijo & tertia.
