Right click on that area (not the clock but between icons)
Click "Customize Notifications" or Notifications and then Customize (next to 'hide inactive icons')
And select either to Never show, or to hide when inactive for each of the program icons that are listed.

To get rid temporarily for the session...just right click on the icon & choose exit. They will return when your computer is next turned on.
To stop them even starting in the first place go to...
Start->Run->then type .. "msconfig" (without the quote marks)..then click OK. A window will appear. Choose startup tab & uncheck the items you do not want to start..DO NOT uncheck system tray (systray) or explorer...DO NOT mess with any of the other tabs like win ini. or system ini. etc
Also do not uncheck any of your antivirus or firewall programs. If you dont recognise some of the entries then do a google search on key words of the entry to find out what they are before unchecking them.
Click apply & Ok
You will be asked to reboot...do so...when you get back into windows a small screen will appear called "system configuration utilities"..saying you have chosen to use custom start up (or similar)..put a check where it asks if you do not want to show this window again...That will stop it coming up each tim e..but it will reappear & ask you again, everytime you go into msconfig & alter the startup items.
The task bar icons which relate to the programs which you have unchecked will no longer appear because these programs will not start up as soon as you turn your computer on.
If you ever want to reverse what you have done just put the checks back ie. do a "msconfig" (as its always called) & check the boxes again & these programs will again startup when you restart your computer & the icons will come up again..

Right click on the taskbar (the blue bar at the bottom of your screen) then select properties.
A small popup should appear with two tabs , the first is 'taskbar' the second 'Start Menu'.
At the bottom of this popup (taskbar tab) you should see a button that says customize. Click on it.
A list of all the programs that appear next to the clock should appear. Select each one of them manually and change the behaviour (right column) to 'Always Hide'.
Et voila :-)

icons in that corner represent application that are running in the background, this applications may have settings that you can modify to change this behavior, normally they can be labelled as "run when windows starts" etc, a shortcut to the application can be placed on your "startut" folder in the "start menu". you can also select the option run in "start menu" and type "msconfig" perss "ok" the you will uncheck all the elements that are loaded at boot time, this is easier and safer than modify the registry

click on the toolbar, window will come up, click on unlock toolbar,
then right click on each icon and click on delete,
this will only get rid of the shortcut, but it gets it off the screen
to close the programme from starting when you switch on, go to the start menu in your start button, ands remove the programmes
