Pretty much what they were, an "evil empire". We knew well before WW!!, after the atrocities of Stalin, that the Soviet Union was not about humanity, but brutal power. Only WW2 emboldened them into the world scene, by giving them power in the United Nations after the war. Their goal after WW2 was world domination under the false pretense of the communist philosophy, but they were never true communists. They sought power by oppression, and eventually failed. Washington always saw them for what they were, brutal, corrupt socialist, full of deceit. It became increasingly difficult for the Soviets to decieve their people with the advances in communication. Imagine if folks had had the internet then.

A force to be seriously worried about. But when the Berlin wall fell we all saw what a pathetic mess the Soviet Union had been in for decades - something our government must have known.

Our government found it convenient to keep us frightened so that they could keep up massive expenditure on armaments and military - Maybe they expected to need these weapons to eventually attack other countries, violate their human rights and take their resources - all against International law.

Oh yeah - the other guys are 'terrorists' and 'rag-heads' which makes it okay - but they're probably about as a real threat to us as the Soviet Union ever was.

But why do the government keep lying to us? Why do the keep violating the spirit of our Democracy?

unfairly. yes, while i dont like commmies, lets be fair. washington made it seem like the USSR wanted to kill every last American. they made it seem like the USSR wouldnt stop bombing us until no american brick was on top of another. but that wasnt true. the soviets, while openly hostile to our freedom of speech, religion, capitolism, etc, didnt hate us. they knew we were the only country capable of fighting and winning a war against them, however costly the victory may be. they wanted communism to spread, to become the way the world works. it was the excact same thing going on right now as then: the US, like the USSR, wanted to make everything a democracy. we though it was the right way. just like the Soviets thought communism was.

simply put, Washington did just what Moscow did. they each made the other side seem evil and each tried to spread their system of government throughout the world. its ironic really, despite a bitter rivalry and total hatred of the other one, the US and the USSR werent that different (if you dont count Stalins massacres and all that stuff)

The united States saw the u.s.s.r as a new treat to the world, and a formidable one at best.
Joseph Stalin wanted Adolf Hitler gone for one reason.....Hitler did what he couldn't do first.
Russia wanted the control of all of Asia and Europe....Stalin made one VERY critical error in trying this......he forgot about the U.S and the Great Britain's.
It was sad to think an allie like Russia would have done such a tragic thing , but they did.
I am glad we won...Britan and the great United States
Be proud of her, she is proud of you [the mother land] U.S.A

Cold!! Ruthless, humorless, hating the Imperialists, vicious and without conscience. Well they vowed to bury the west. They lacked finesse ex;ample. Russian leader not liking the way thing were going at the UN assembly, started to beat his shoe on his desk, interrupting proceedings and continue to pound his shoe on the desk They have come a long way in conducting negotiations, and participating in meetings.

I believe that the portrayal of the Soviets was pretty accurate. It was a harsh, heavily corrupt government with a heavy hand on suppression.
