Pride and Prejudice is one of the best books ever -- my personal favorite. The book will surprise you, because while it is a romance of sorts, the main characters will not do what you expect.
You asked about the movie, and there is a movie version that is very very close to the book -- that is the BBC version of it: http://www.amazon.com/Pride-Prejudice-Special-Simon-Langton/dp/B00005MP58/sr=8-1/qid=1158280490/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-7172579-0039332?ie=UTF8&s=dvd
If you need help with figuring out the book, the above will be your best bet. The movie version that Keira Knightley was in was ok, but not really a full version. There was an Indian version, (Bride and Prejudice) which was very musical and fun, but you can't get a lot of the main storyline from it. Also, Bridget Jones was based on the book Pride and Prejudice.
Good luck, and happy reading!

I haven't read it, as I have little interest in romances, even really good ones. The movie I liked because it showed the historical period very well. It was beautifully done and funny, and has a happy ending even for those who don't quite deserve it. There is an Indian movie version called "Bride and Prejudice" which is also fun; it is a delightful transfer of the story into modern Indian culture. I think it may be good to see the movie before reading the book, as the book has more detail and depth. After the book, a movie tends to disappoint if only because it can't measure up to the book.

at first let me tell u that the movie is awful!
but the book...
It's a really great book between romantic novels such as "Gone with the wind"! Much more better!!
You know, Jane Austen's stories portray how people act & behave in romantic situations...
A famous contemporary novelist said: 'This may be the same in all romantic novels but the diffrence between Austen's novels & other romantic novels is that they're written by a genius!"
so it's good book esp. if u like romantic ones!
Just read it!!

...
Hope it was helpful! :)

the movie is generally good, but worse than the book...there is an extended version of the movie that is like 6 hrs long but it is definitely much better than the movie that came out in theaters....the book is actually very good...it can be a bit dry and boring at times, but it is subtly funny and it is enjoyable if you read it closely and slowly....its very thought provoking and influential...jane austen (the author) is masterful in this work of hers and is very satirical and witty in her writing...i found it enjoyable, but it is definitely not a fast read
