Smoking in particular. Do smokers have a right to use their recreational drug, nicotine, in public places where there are crowds of other people who do not have a choice but to breath the 'exhaust' fumes from this drug use? Where I work, a public building downtown, smokers must smoke outside the building. Hundreds of people work in the building, so at any given time, there are at least a dozen drug users in front of the building turning the air blue with tobacco smoke. Anyone entering the building is forced to share in this drug use or hold their breath while entering the building.

Should recreational drug users have a right to impose their habit on others?

Retard Finder-Its not the occasional sniff that concerns me. Its being forced to use drugs when I choose not to. What are my rights?

Itsmearc-Drinking would be different if everybody who walked by had to take a tiny sip of whatever is being consumed every time they walked by, or continuosly if you had to hang around there.

Avtech-Irritating? I find it irritating that I do not have a right to be drug free if I choose.

Retard finder-If people who 'whinge' upset you so much, then why do you seek us out? Got nothing better going on?

WOW! Looks like the smokers are in the majority here. Some comments have been thoughtful and some rude, but I have an advantage over smokers that they may not realize. I can choose not to smoke. Can you?

Hosebunny-You're answers are thoughtful, but there are no drug free cigarettes. Nicotine is a drug, and it is addictive, and smokers MUST have it just to maintain peace of mind. Don't believe it? Try doing without for a couple days. Sorry.

Do you ever go camping? How about grill out on the patio?

I was just wondering because you see, that charcoal and lighter fluid exhaust from the campfires and BBQ grills is enough to kill you 7 times faster than someone's little ciggarette could (of which there is no proof whatsoever that this could happen, btw).

Do you live in the city? Air is worse from pollution there from diesel and factory fumes/smoke alone.

I could go on and on...

Lighten up and grow up, dude.

Pate and ITsmearc: LOL, no sh*t. I'm a female and I'll tell ya, I'm sick of having to look at billboards with half naked women on them and porn ads on the internet being yelled at by drunken men hanging outside of bars...and I'm D@MN sick and tired of having to look at all those stupid yellow ribbons on people's cars too!!

CDB: I see you wrote back. I myself only smoke all-natural roll-ups. No drugs in my stogies. And if we're gonna talk about "drugs" then let me ask you this....do you only buy ORGANIC food? Because I hate to break it to ya, but that is the only food out there that doesn't have pesticides/steroids/aspartame/etc., etc. in it. Yes, all of our food has crap (drugs) that the government and big companies put in there for various reasons. And really, most smokers I know are very considerate around others.

CDB (2): OK, yeah forgot about the nicotine. However, nicotine doesn't affect non-smokers in the second-hand sense. They don't get enough of it. Furthermore, coffee and tea have caffeine. You're not gonna get on someone's case for having a morning cup of joe are ya--even if they HAVE to have it?

Look, here where I live in Madison, WI our noble city has done away with all smoking in restaurants and bars. I understand the restaurant thing. I don't even want people's smoke wafting into my face while I'm trying to eat (and the smoking sections are never properly divided). But bars?? Come on---half the non-smokers I know light up once they get a drink in their hand. I think that's a bit unfair. What might be fairer, is to have bars that opt to go smoke-free, while others opt to allow smoking. So I guess this is a sore point for me as I like to go out and have a drink once in a while. Oh, and that guy who said he couldn't even smoke on his own property--that's insane! What are they gonna tell him he can't have sex with his wife on Sundays either?

No I hate being around cigarette smoke in public, there should be only designated places in public where people can smoke outside (if at all). Second hand smoke is a killer and I appreciate not dying :)

You're right, you should breath in fresh clean air. I think it's absurd that in parts of California, if your backyard is near a public area you can't smoke on your own damn property! What a person does on his own property should not be governed by law (including marijuana usage)! :) But if you are ON public property, I don't think people should be allowed to smoke cigarettes, 'cause this harms the health of other people who are trying to enjoy some fresh air. It is unfair that a person who does not smoke should suffer the consequences of second hand smoke. And not only that but children could see people smoking and think it's cool and then pick up the habit. When I used to smoke, if I ever saw small children I used to hide my cigarette, 'cause I didn't want to be a bad influence.

How about public drunkenness? We all have our weakness. Do you think I should have to look at all the Adult book stores when I believe that it pollutes my mind and body. Hold your breath you wont get rid of smokers
