Chemical Addatives

Gasoline is the same wherever you go but the refineries add:
antiknock chemicals, corrosion inhibitors, antioxidants, detergents, dispersants, anti-icers, combustion enhancers/modifiers, fluidizer oils and flow improvers.

The recipes differ from company to company but are added in order to prevent carbon deposits, improve engine life and increase fuel efficiency.

I like freaky's answer. There is a good article about this a while back at the Chicago Tribune where a reporter followed the gas back to the oil fields.
Very hard to do, since it all pretty much gets blended and mixed up, depending on which refinery is going to need which kind of crude that day.
Biggest differences are in where the profits end up from the Corporate headquarters. BP is British, Chevron markets Venezuela's oil, Mobil/Exxon does general evil things like all the rest around the world, and Shell does too.

Each refinery places its own chemical markers into the gasoline it produces. Further, gasoline produced for one region of the country may differ my law from that sold into a different region because of certain legislation to reduce smoke and pollution, etc. Other than the octanes, and the additives gas is basic gas. What makes the difference is the type and quality of associated services provided by the two different companies at their local distribution centers (gas stations). One may tell you that their gas makes your car run better. Who can really tell?

Mobil may put a different additive or detergent in their gas than Shell does, but aside from that, it is all the same gas..

It's a competition/number game really to see which company will be the first to claim it is the one to produce a cleaner safer and more efficient fuel. There isn't much difference at all. Marketing maybe.

I think Shell's products taste better. Guess it's like the Coke/Pepsi thing. Personal preference.
