The English system is what we use in the United States. The metric system is a completely different way to measure things. It is used in most of the world. The US is one of the few countries that doesn't use it. You use it the same way as the English system. You just think differently. Instead of miles you measure kilometers. Instead of pounds you use kilograms.

Did you ever but a 2-liter bottle of Coke or Pepsi? Take a picture on 35mm film? Play a DVD or Compact Disc (120mm in diameter). Read a barometer in mm of mercury? Then you have used the metric system.

inch (in) = approx. 3 centimeters (cm)
1 cm = 10 milimeters (mm)
1 metre (m) = 100 cm (1000mm)
1 kilometre (km) = 1000 metres (100 000cm)

1 kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams (g)
1 tonne (t) = 1000 kg

1 Litre (L) =1 mililitre(mL)

You can use the metric system by using any of the measurments mentioned above to measure the length, mass, or capacity of any matter.
