Depends on whether you mean:
1 + (a/5) = -1

Or

(1 + a) / 5 = -1

In the first case,
1 + (a/5) = -1

You subtract 1 from both sides:
a/5 = -2

Then multiply by 5:
a = -10

In the second case, you multiply both sides by 5:
1 + a = -5

Then subtract 1 from both sides:
a = -6

I think you meant the second equation, in which case the solution would be a = -6. Double check by putting it back in the original equation:
(1 + a) / 5 =?
(1 + -6) / 5 =?
(-5) / 5 =?
-5 / 5 =?
-1 = -1

So a = -6 is correct.

You mean:

1 + a/5 = -1

a/5 = -2

a = -10

If you meant:

(1 + a)/5 = -1

1 + a = -5

a = -6
