They are not a powerful nation. They would like to be and that is why they would like a nuclear weapons programme. But, at present, they are not a military force. After losing more than a million lives in their 8 year war with Iraq they have never recovered. This is why rather than confront Israel or the West they prefer to support terrorism.

Iran has a very large military, 420 thousand active duty soldiers, 350 thousand reservists, as well as the paramilitary Basij numbering 90 thousand regular and 300 thousand reservists - but with a support base of more than one million people, which (altogether, minus the one million basij) is a similar size to the army of the US. Anyone saying Iran isn't powerful is kidding themselves.

The have, and are gaining influence in the Middle East, but they really aren't that powerful. They have 68 million people, and most aren't radical. As a military power, they wouldn't last two months in an all out war with a western civilization. They would however send terrorists to bug the crap out of the western powers.

It's not very powerful. They cause many deaths through their sponsorship of terrorists and they train suicide bombers, but ultimately they could be easily "wiped off the map." To use their Israeli goals. Fortunately (or unfortunately) the countries that would get rid of Iran like an annoying insect, believe that we should not use nuclear weapons indiscriminately. Iran probably is very secure in the tolerance and moral agony of the West.

They have the oil that the Americans need. If we all changed to solar power or wind power they would infact be of no consequence at all.
