well most came by boat, they came for religious freedom, economic opportunity, they stayed in the seaport cities or else they staked a claim on farmland. They did mostly agricultural work up until the industrial revolution of the 19th century when cities grew and industry expanded.

The new immigrants came, becasue they were persecuted in their own lands. However some upper class people came, becasue only the first son inherited property and they wanted to establish a fortune of their own. The people came by boats. They stayed in the towns that they created. So many people died early on, becasue they had not built a safe place to live. Most of the work people did involved farming, however there was so industrial devolopment. Ship building was a major industry in New England. Hope that this helps.

To escape the political, economic, and religious turmoil of Europe. And NO, most did NOT come to escape religous persecution -- that was mostly Massachusetts Bay. Spanish settlers came for the three G's: Gold, God, and Glory (Gold and Glory being obvious -- the God part was to convert the natives). Most of the English colonies were created to make money.

They all came by boat -- most paid their own way, but many were indentured servents for a few years to pay for it. For the first few years of a colony, almost everyone was either a farmer or craftsman.

Well, the why & how have been answered & part of the "what did they do?" Yes, most of them did farming & the men did the hunting & building. Everything from their homes to their furniture, tools & even some of their dishes. The women kept house, had & tended babies, carded, washed & spun wool and/or flax, made soap, candles, clothes, quilts. Washed clothing, dishes etc. When you remember there were no washing machines, dishwashers, sewing machines, gas/electric stoves, readymade fabric or clothing, soaps, candles, nothing. They had to fetch in every drop of water from the nearest creek or spring & chop enough wood to heat the house & the water & to cook with. They all had to work very hard from a quite early age in order to stay alive. Hope I haven't bored you. I love history. I really don't think those were the "good ole days".

They came in hoping for a better life, they saw opportunity. They came by boat. They stayed on the Eastern part of the US, settled from East to West. Some of my ancestors came to Nantucket Island. I think they did all types of work.

incredibly it wasn't religious freedom they wanted. They wanted to create a society the place anybody became Puritan. they had made a nuisance of themselves in England and in Holland because of the fact of their intolerance. They moved to the recent worldwide to create a sort society the place anybody had an identical faith--theirs. possibly they have been questioning of recruiting new converts between the Indians, yet whilst so that they did no longer communicate plenty approximately it.
