Many fish experts recommend dropping the fish in a bowl of water that is as ice cold as you can make it (float ice cubes in cold water). Drop the fish in it and he will be dead within a few seconds. I've had to do this to a few very sick fish so they wouldn't suffer. Don't slowly freeze them, that is cruel. Don't flush...they can die a slow painful death this way.

There are 2 schools of thought with regard to euthanizing a fish. One is you can use a very heavy dose of Clove Oil in your tank where the fish currently resides. This however is quite messy, and leaves a lot to be cleaned up after the fish die (it stinks, the tank needs to be completely cleaned out, and it's just not for the faint at heart to watch your aquatic buddy pass on right before your eyes).
The putting of a fish into a zip lock baggie of it's own tank water (not pre-cooled water, and provided it can fit in there) and then into your freezer is a very quick and humane way to send them into a coma like state where cardiac arrest then takes place and the fish passes away. It is a very quick process (less than 15minutes in most cases) and is completely humane.
As for pain (in either case) it is a lot more humane than to let them suffer with incureable cases of Dropsy or Bloat (or if it's been hurt and is suffering from the attack of another fish).

What is your fish suffering from? If it is really bad and incurable, the fist won't live too long anyway. Otherwise go buy some meds and hope for the best. Mela fix has helped me out many times as well as a good ich med. But, if you want to put it out of it's misery I'd have to say that dropping it in a cup of boiling water would be a lot quicker. Think of a lobster.

I've heard of using the clove oil and some vodka. Oil anesthesizes them alcohol kills them. That appears to be the most humane way. I personally get a cup of very cold water(use ice to cool it), put the fish in it to shock it, usually stop breathing within seconds. I then put them in the freezer. I don't like the idea of putting them into the freezer while still alive flopping around till it gets cold enough. Also heard of whacking them on the head & cutting off their heads, but that's just not me........

Whoa!!!! Not putting a fish DIRECTLY in a freezer, but freezing some water just right so it doesn't have ice on it and put the fish in there. It IS quick and painless. I have NEVER heard of someone putting a fish in a freezer. That is long and painful.

well make sure that the fish is a gonner for sure.the bowl of water that is almost freezing does work very fast. I couldnt imagine a giant tossing me in a big ole toilet! My g-friend had a tiger loach that was just too sick to bring back (and everything was tried) so she pulled a dr. kavorkian.....We could tell the little guy was suffering........In a matter of a few seconds the fish was dead. One thing for sure....the fish was not suffering.....Good luck with the healthy fish!

Cold is a fairly long, but not as cruel as some methods. Direct contact with ice would cause some pain, but it's pretty brief as it will numb the area. Flushing is generally long and painful death. The least painless death would be to over dose the fish on an anthensic, and then cut off it's head. Personally as I grew up on a farm I use a brick, and towel.
-Net fish
-Place on towel
-fold towel
-fish with a brick
-throw towel and fish away
It sounds cruel, but if you strike hard, and fast it's over before the fish feels any pain.

Actually, putting a fish in a damp paper towel in the freezer is a recognized "humane" way to dispatch a sick fish. Fish don't feel a whole lot anyway, and the drop in temperature slows their metabolism swiftly and fairly painlessly does them in. This is a good thing to know BEFORE you really need to know it, so thanks for asking.

I don't think that it could be proven that that feel pain and as far as putting the fish in the freezer to put it down. I would say it makes no difference in my opinion. Would you feel better in the freezer? I think that you must answer this by saying how would you feel.

Well that is one way to get the job done without seeing a mess. In freezing, the party involved, according to all the stories I have read, just goes to sleep. In the case you suggested, the sleep is endless.
