Go online now and find a service provider (like PeoplePC, NetZero, SBC or Prodigy) that does offer dialup. It will cost a few bucks, but you will have access.

I too, have cable internet at home. My provider offers web based e-mail so that I can access my e-mail from any computer that has an internet connection. See if your provider does too. I also have a Blackberry so I forward my e-mails to that when I'm going to be away for a while. Failing that, you can always grab a free hotmail account or something like that and use it for the duration of your trip. Just let your contacts know to use the temporary e-mail address or set your current e-mail program to forward to the temporary one.

Do you have a laptop that you are carrying with you? Where are you going? If you are staying in motels, most of them provide highspeed wireless internet.. check with the website for the hotel chains and find out where to stay, if you don't already have reservations for your whole vacation, but, also, probably, the hotel you're booked into has that.

Internet cafe
Library
(Make sure you know how to read e-mail from browser for the above)

You'll need a laptop for the following:

Hot spot (do a search on yahoo for the region you go to.)
Drive around to find an unsecured wireless router and borrow time on that (sometimes illegal)
Kinko's (see hot spots)

search the web for internet cafes. these are cafes that have computers that you can use for a fee. some malls have internet kioks as well for the same purpose.

you could also search for "free wireless nodes". but i would be careful. i have heard there are ways to steal your info this way by setting up another wireless node close to one of those with a stronger signal to hijack your signal.

Get a phone that has tri-band, and can be used as a computer and modem. You can then connect to the internet through the phone or connect it to your lap top and use as a modem.
