Brain structure and brain chemistry.

Being gay is only one part of a "grab bag" of mental states.

Gay is tied to lefthandedness, creativity, artistic ability, empathy tendency towards drug addiction, high IQ, schyzophrenia and clinical depression.

Most gay men display many of these traits in combination.

back when evolution was still culling humans, having a gay man or two in the tribe helped, rather than hindered the groups survival success.

They contributed to the survival of their siblings, but tended not to breed as often. Their genetic tendencies were passed along, but only at a rate of 5% or so. Too many gays and society broke down (see Sparta in ancient greece). Not enough, and a lack of innovation stifled possibility.

interestingly, lesbianism, although related to homosexuality in many respects does not seem to have the same related factors.
