You can create Word-compatible files using WordPad (in Start>All Programs>Accessories on all Windows XP machines, in a similar location on Windows 95 and 98). You could also use Microsoft Works Word Processor if you have that - be sure to select Word format when saving.

You will need to purchase a the MS Word for your computer. However, you computer may have Notepad or Wordpad, which can be used to do simple homework assignments.

it's a package which contains word, excel, access and other program you would need for school.

I have Abiword on my computer, and I love it. It is very easy to work with. It is free through gnu. I think I found it on freeware.com. Have a look at this one first. If you don't like it, don't get it.
