The company needs to recoup their research and development costs.

It's the same with pharmaceuticals.

They are not expensive. You can buy a brand new Pentium based computer for way under $500, sometimes for about $200, software and all.

Actually they are not. If you bought an Apple IIC new (no hard drive, floppy only, 128kb ram) it would have run about $3000.00. Since you apparently don't want to spend much buy a floor model or a refurbished one and save a hundred or so.

pricing varies depending on maker and software ,the more a computer can do the more it costs;plus you have to factor in how the hardware is made,were it was made.;the technology involved.
