I agree with the Roald Dahl books. Books like:
Matilda
BFG
The Witches
James and the Giant Peach
Twits
George's Marvelous Medicine
Will Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
There are more that he wrote but those I have read as a kid and loved! Try this site for more- http://www.roalddahl.com/
I also LOVED Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books! They are by Betty MacDonald. This site can tell you about the books to see if you would like them- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._Piggle-Wiggle
Keep reading!!

King Fortis the Brave - a pair of twins are pulled into a magical world where they are caught up in a battle for control of the land. Full of adventure and humor, it's one of the best books I've ever read.

"Where The Red Fern Grows". I can't remember the author, but most librarians have heard of it. Great book for a kid his or her age! Made me cry! Action, adventure, drama, tear jerker at the end.
