There is no rule for this. This is determined on the condition of the patient, and many other factors. I do not know what the baby's billirubin levels were drawn at, so I can't even tell you how long they would have to stay for the jaundice. They must be able to consistently stabilize their own body temperature for a while before they will consider discharge, and there could be many other medical complications I am unaware of. Sorry I can't advise you, but no one can at this point, even the baby's neonatologist, as they will have to see how the little one reacts and progresses.

My now 23 year old son spent three weeks in the NICU after he was born. He was 5 weeks early, had a collapsed lung, jaundice and had a strep B infection. His weight was 6 lbs, 4 ozs. Had he not had the infecton he would have been fine to go home because of the good weight. He came home the day before Thanksgiving in 1993. My son has now served one tour in Iraq and is 6' tall and about 180 pounds. Very healthy young man!!! All babies are different but as long as they progress well with no further complications they don't have to stay to long now a days. They have come very far in the medical care for newborns.

As soon as it is healthy and able to maintain it's own body heat. There really isn't any way to say how long it will take. It all depends on how well the baby responds to treatment.
Usually they hospital would like a baby to be about 4 lbs before it goes home.

It will depend on the baby and how he/she does. Boys tend to work a little slower then girls. Sometimes jaundice lights can be sent home on the baby and returned later if its not to bad.

There's no set time period.
When the baby reaches a certain weight....when the lungs are clear and healthy.....when the jaundice has been treated....then the baby can go home.

Until they can regulate their own body temp, the jaunduce goes away, they can nurse or take a bottle. My son was 11 weeks early and he came home a week before his due date.
