In case you hadn't noticed, football / soccer isn't very popular in the USA. Most people probably had no idea that the World Cup was even going on. Also, those few of us that were paying attention knew that getting past Italy was unlikely, at best.
I am in Southern California, and I followed Mexico much more closely than the US team - and Mexico was something of a disappointment, also, even though they made it into the second round.
Happy? No. Apathetic? Yes.

Can we win? Yes. Will we win? Probably not. Most people - including most Americans - don't give the USA credit enough for our soccer team. Or did they forget the Women's team has already won 2 world cups? Most of the men's national team plays in Europe these days, not just in the US league. USA made it to the final 8 four years ago ... considering more of our players have been playing in the big leagues in Europe, I don't see why we couldn't make it that far. But, it will be a few more world cups before I would bet on us winning (assuming the team continues to progres). Hey, the US beat Mexico in the qualifying rounds - we don't suck!

I'm not American, but I know that very few Americans knew that there was a World Cup tournament being held this summer, and even fewer actually supported the American team during the Group stage.
Seriously, though, how many people leap for joy when the team they support is eliminated from a tournament?

The people in this country like watching damn cars go in a freaking circle, so they most likely wouldn't like watching/playing soccer. Personally, I was happy when the US lost because that would save them a lot of humiliation if they lost by a lot to a great team then by a little to a not so good team. Only like 17% of the US watched the WC so I guess that shows how much we like the sport

not happy, no. but not really sad either. we were a lot more disapointed when we just lost in the world basketball championship semi-finals, because we know who the players were. dwayne wade, carmello anthony, lebron james. american sports fans know who these guys are. but i for one, and i'll bet i speak for 90% of my fellow americans, could not name one single player on the soccer team. i know the coach was bruce arena, i remember reading that, but that's all i know. i don't even have a clue what arenas background was. soccer is very popular as a kids sport here, but not as a spectator sport. it's not on TV here at all. unless maybe you pay for some obscure european soccer package. so the bottom line is, most of us weren't happy that the team lost, but it was no big deal.

from the context i will assume that you are asking about how we felt when the u.s. world cup was eliminated by ghana about 2.5 months ago. in that case, i was not happy, but i was not suprised either. the u.s. team played like s**t the whole tournament, and did not deserve to advance. i don't know why you would think that we would be happy that america lost. i have teams that i support more, but i still support america too

I could have cared less that they were eliminated from WC. I was even surprised they were ranked as highly as they were when the WC began. I wasn't even supporting them i was supporting Ghana and Italy.

What are we supposed to feel? Disappointed, yes, but soccer is not a US sport so that any success should be celebrated.
