I am a mother of 3 boys and I breast feed all of them and my doctor told me I could pump when milk is there to pump how ever my milk came in about 2 - 3 weeks before they were born.
I had to pump because I would spring leaks and was very painful if I didn't pump.

Allow the baby to get as much colostrum (clear milk) as possible, do not pump or waste this precious fluid. It is the essential protein that lines the esophogus, stomach and intestines. This helps the baby digest the more complex protiens that are about to come from the white milk. It can take upto a full week (7 FULL days) for the colostrum to cease. I would like to advocate for the AVENT brand breast pump. I have used medical grades, cheap electric hand helds, and hand pumps in other names...none are as comfortable and easy as the AVENT series.

Your milk doesn't generally come in until a few days after birth. As soon as it comes in you can start pumping.

You can begin pumping as soon as your baby is born; however, during the first few days, it is colostrum instead of milk - it comes in in a few days after birth.
