Person X will love Person Y only as long as Person Y seems to promote Person X's survival and/or point of view. The moment Person y seems to not promote Person X's survival and/or point of view, person X will not love Person Y anymore.

Have you ever personally experienced an exception to this definition?

in other words...do you love the person who cuts you off in traffic or loks at you the wrong way or hates you or robs you or cheats on you and lies to you or betrays you etc.

Are these not fair examples of people who are NOT promoting your survival or point of view?

Well, I will give you 'that' that I see that concept of love in practice everyday. Yesterday I received a letter asking for advice from a girl that seemed to feel ill-used by her male. Thinking of that and many letters I have read from the young girls, I see a pattern where even where their feelings are trampled upon, beaten, cheated upon, ignored, etc., they are desperate for the 'guy' to finally treat them with a better sense of respect and return their feelings. Not that women have the market cornered in this regard...I see that with males too. Now is this love? Self preservation of which you speak, seems to be ignored in these types of relationships. Perhaps it is a misinterpretation of the word LOVE.

Real love, becomes selfless. It no longer relies upon 'what's in it for me? How can I parlay this to my advantage. It also becomes contagious and effects 'how' you relate to the world at large, methinks. Example: A man throws a child, complete stranger to himself out of harm's way when a car is barreling towards it.

Your definition leaves no room for selfless love. You see love as self-serving and as the offspring of selfishness.

I would hate to think I was only loved because I provided emotional and existential support.

I think it sucks - Person X and Person Y should respect each other's opinions and compromise - that's what love and being in a relationship is.

no..but my lawyer friend talks like this to me all the time. heres what i think.
your heart is like a compass, always pointing in the right direction. we just have to follow it. love comes from your heart, follow it..you are the only definer??of it.
