.30 times 1500 equals $450 for housing

.08 times 1240 = $99.20 so they have exceeded the budget by $25.80

The housing budget is 30%. You'd take 30% times 1500, the family income. Otherwise written as 1500 X .30, which equals 450.
To figure out the second problem you'd take what the budgeted amount is supposed to be and subtract that from what they actually spent. They should have spent: 1240 income times 8% clothing budget. Other wise written as 1240 X .08, which equals 99.20. They spent 125. You then take 125 - 99.20 to get the amount over the budget, which is 25.80.

30% x 1500 = .3 x 1500 = 450.00 on housing

125 = 1240 x X% X% = 125/1240 X% = 10% 10% - 8% (budgeted) = 2% over

1) Family one would plan to spend $450 on housing. $1500 x .30 = $450.

2) Family two should spend $99.20 on clothing but instead spent $125 so they exceeded the budget by $25.80. $1240 x .08 = $99.20; $125 - $99.20 = $25.80.

450 = 30 times 1500
120 = 8 times 1500
120 = 8 times 1500
375 = 25 times 1500
225 = 15 times 1500
90 = 6 times 1500
120 = 8 times 1500
-----
1500 is the total (verifying the answer is correct)

Simply take 1500 and multiply it by the
percentage amount without using the % sign.

1) $450 (1500 X .30 =450)
2) 25.80 (1240 X .08 =99.20) (the amount they can spend)
(step 2) (125 - 99.20 =25.80) (25.80 amount over)

1 - $450.00

1500 * .30 = $450.

2 - They exceeded their clothing budget by $35.80

1240 * .8 = 99.20

125 - 99.20 = 35.80
