How safe is is it to take the engine cover off?

You can take the engine cover off anytime that you want. It's basically for cosmetic purposes and you may have heard it referred to as a "beauty cover". It is probably a good idea to take it off every once in a while so you can get out any dirt or debris that may be underneath there that could start a fire. It's rare but, it can happen. It is put there for looks, and to protect the engine. Not to mention you, as the owner, from getting burned or getting a hand caught in any moving mechanisms. It's safe, don't worry about it.
