Had the same problems with my water for many years. Sounds like you get your water from a well (like I do) and it's not being filtered prior to entering into your house. I was told the red sediment was basically comprised of iron and other elements coming from the underground water supply.

I finally installed two filters last year.......one to trap larger particles such as sand.......and another to trap the finer particles such as fine sediment like the "red-stuff" you're seeing. You can contact a plumbing supply store to discuss what you're seeing and they can pick out what's right for your situation and give you an estimate. I checked with Lowes and Home Depot and neither carried the fine-filter.

The filter that traps the sand particles can simply be rinsed out once a month simply by backwashing....but the filter that traps the fine sediment is fairly expensive ($25- $30) and needs to be changed about every 3 months or so....depending on the severity of your water. Also, FYI, neither filter lowered the water pressure to the house.

Once I installed both.... the red sediment was eliminated.

Hope this information was of some help to you!

sounds like rust - your water may have a high level of sediment in it.
