Get out of the house! One of the best ways to lift my spirits is to go for a walk to a park. It can be good for just watching and listening to nature, or what I find even better is watching the joy that kids have when they are at play.

Well, the obvious thing for "doesn't cost money" is the Internet, since you are already on it. Researching just for the sheer joy of facts is one way, or to find a hobby you can do with materials you already have.

One option there, if you have the usual household glue and tape and so on at least, is to create collages from old magazines, and the old-fashioned concept of a scrap-book, before it became a boutique item to spend money on.

Also, there are many "recycle and re-use" things you can do with scraps you already have, or scraps other people have, or things you can pick up at a thrift shop for nominal money.

One of the most creative and interesting ones I have seen is doing makeovers and redressing thrift shop fashion dolls. Some people are doing quite amazing things, and there are plenty of patterns and ideas on the Internet for free, or in second-hand books in the crafts section.

In fact, if it's really "very little money" rather than no money at all, I would recommend you check out the crafts section of the largest second-hand bookstore you can find. There are some really marvelous things that go for pretty cheap, because people change with regard to hobbies and interests, and because once someone gets too old to do a particular craft, if the family does not have someone who wants it, that book will be sold pretty cheap. So if you spend your time browsing carefully and don't buy on impulse, you will probably find something to engage your interest without costing money that way.

My own suggestion would be quilting, if you know someone who sews and can give you scraps. I got into it in self-defense, after the scraps from making my dresses threatened to take over, and I couldn't bear to throw them out. But like making a scrap-book, quilting is also something that can be an excuse to spend money, sometimes a lot of money, and you need to be careful. It doesn't need to cost much at all. If you quilt by hand, you will be slow enough, and making a more precious heirloom. And if you quilt and also piece by hand, you will go slow enough; trust me.

Try looking up your family Ancestry. You can do much before you start paying for information. Start with the web. You can pass down that information to your family later. And you might meet a distant relative.

Or go to the library and get some hobby books and see what appeals to you.

Or volunteer some time (look on web for your area) Do this till you find something--many times you can give just a few hours a week or month-it is up to you.

I have suffered from depression my entire life and it became worse postpartum. I went on that way for months with no relief in sight until I picked up a book at the supermarket that detailed the lives of people born with severe disabilities or deformities and of how they had succeeded in life.. As I read it,I began to think about my situation and realized I had the tools to change my life (good physical health ) and decided to start reaching out to others and helping them with a glad heart. Don't misunderstand me,I am NOT saying the depression was cured nor do I imply it can be self-treated or with such simple methods. I understand what you are going through and if you are getting professional help that is important. However, sometimes depression that is caused by a chemical imbalance or a traumatic life experience can be accompanied by a poverty of spirit. When we feel worthless and unloved it can damage our ability to reach out to others. I made up my mind to break the cycle and began to get out more,to give of myself to others. In my case I began by going back to church. Other ways of giving of yourself would be to read to school children or the elderly and shut-in. Meals on wheels always needs volunteers. There are so many ways of sharing yourself with others and the rewards can be unexpected. In my case, the more I thought about others the more my spirits lifted. I am not judging you because as I said before,I have been there and am only hoping for the best outcome possible and this suggestion is only one way to go. God bless you!

skating, bike riding, walking. painting, or drawing (you do have to buy the supplies, but they can be had for under 20.00) writing songs, or poetry. hiking in the mountains, or woods. going to museums< (some are free, or not too much) if you have a digital camera, photography. you already have the computer. fishing, lots of things, just get out and get some fresh air! thats the best cure for depression, anyway.

I have keyboard at home. When I am angry or frustrated about work, I go home and pound on my keyboard; play some fast beat songs. It usually helps. In your case, I think you need a counselor. Confide whatever borders you to someone help alot.

If you can afford paper, writing and art work is relatively cheap and very relaxing.
