I have a Compaq Presario V2000 and it works pretty good. It is very fast and I have downloaded tons of things on it and it is still running fast. I use it for business purposes. It is light and it has a widescreen. And it was under $1000. I bought it in January 2006 at Best Buy.

Well I used to think Toshiba's were the best, today I don't know. Many of the laptops Compaq, Dell, etc are really made by some third party like Compal or Lenvo, etc. The Dell's were easiest to work on. You want to get a 3 year warranty on any laptop. I don't how many times I have had to tell somebody that they had to replace the LCD or motherboard after the unit was over a year old. It was often over 1/2 the price of the laptop for the repair.

gateway- had mine for almost 3 years. Only problem was the power adapter socket...fixed under warranty

ALWAYS get the extended (3 year) warranty with laptops.

Check Sam's club. They have some pretty good deals.
