Major loss of life during the first and second World War. Many men did not return, and women needed to provide for herself and children.
Then the ones who did return were abusive alcoholics who suffered from shell shock (aka post war depression) and were useless to the work force.

WW 1 AND WW 2 gave women leverage to change the constitution. All the men overseas and at war - emptying the factories of labour and technical positions. The massive participation of women in the workforce in those wars throughout the west. There was further participation after because of the huge demand for workers to reconstruct or to simply construct more goods because of those that were lost in those wars.
