First, you need to start with your pre-makeup routine. make sure your skin is clean, lightly exfoliated (exfoliate once a week) and use an oil free moistrurizer. Allow the moistrurizer to be soaked in for about a minute, then dab with a tissue to pick up the excess. Use a primer, or mattifier depending on your skin type. Then go with your foundation, never use a lot, a dot for each cheek, chin, forehead and nose. Begin at the cheeks and work your way out. I'm not a fan of makeup sponges, but if thats what you can afford they work well. Just make sure to always use a clean one, otherwise it will cake up. Personally I use a foundation brush, but those can be rather pricey for a decent one. Always warm up your liquid makeups before using them, makes it easier to apply and blend. Never blend upwards, the foundation will get caught and caked under the fine hairs on your face. After that, if you're applying concealer do it on top of your foundation, otherwise it will just smear off. Use a concealer brush or your fingertip and apply a light amount to the spot and blend. When applying powder again, I use a brush. I feel powder puffs deliver too much excess and is harder to blend. Swirl the brush in the powder, tap off the excess, and gently "brush" it on in downward strokes. Knock out the rest of the powder out of the brush, then "dust off the excess" off your face. And those are my secrets. I also suspect that you are using the wrong foundation for your skin type. Unfortunately, not all foundations you can buy at the drugstore will work for everyone's skin. I suggest hitting your local department stores and get samples or test runs of the foundations there. Most department store brands will assess your skin type and color, and will fit you with the correct foundation. Then from there you can decide which one looks and feels best to you. I HTH!

If it's cakey your using too much.... Try using a "Flocked sponge" you can get them anywhere, sally's, target, sephora etc. Use just a tad, I mean like the size of a pea to start- you can always add but once it's on it's hard to fix too much makeup of any kind.
Do you use a liquid or mineral foundation? Either way start with what may appear to be too little, you also may have the wrong formula for your skin, If that's the case try watering it down to smooth it out. HTH :)

Take it from a Beauty Expert. In order for foundation to not look cakey on your skin, take some and warm it up on the inside of your wrists. In other words, rub some of your foundation on the inside if your wrists. Do that with all of your makeup products. Your Foundation, Concealer, all of your Liquid Makeups.
It's Best to use a soft cosmetic sponge but when sponges aren't available, rub your Liquid Makeups and the insides of your wrists.

Don't use a sponge ok? A sponge will also cake and make weird patterns on your skin. Use a foundation brush. It gives you a natural glow too. Just put some foundation on the back of your hand and dip the brush into the foundation and brush it on your face, making like air brushy swipes.

this is a trick that i learned: use Smashbox primer which evens out your skin then use your concealer. Dab it where it is needed and then if you have a good foundation and a good brush -foundation applying brush- use them. I like the Chanel ones even though they are pricier since you get what you pay for. Use foundation with your fave moisturizer to make it more fluidy and then use a sponge to blend. Dont forget to do your eyes after your foundation in case you mess up. I hope this helped.

First maybe your not wearing the right foundation, you shouldn't have to layer it on in order for it to work, there are some great matte foundations out there that look flawless. Blend blend blend!
Use a make-up sponge it works better then fingertips because your fingers are skin and warmth so they suck up some of the foundation. Good luck!

It could be the foundation itself. Bobby Brown and Pout both have great foundations.
Only apply make-up to a clean and moisturized face. Use a foundation brush!!! They work wonders. You can find a great one at Sephora or the counter where you purchase the foundation. Invest in foundation brush- seriously, it works!
Hope this helps :D

I heard it's best to use a professional quality like one from sephora to apply foundation, it doesn't suck up the makeup like a sponge or you fingers and you get a light touch. also try using makeup primer from sephora and spraying a mist of moisture surge spray from clinique helps smooth out the cakiness.

Lancome puts out a wonderful brush for applying foundation. You brush on your foundation in an upward motion and it works beautifully!( it also fills in the cracks nicely, if you have them!)
