Strum the chord, of course. You strum with a pick almost all times, except when you're overall just not using a pick at all in the song, then you don't have to.

If you wanted to pick the chord with your fingers, you would have to drop the pick. I suggest strumming it; nothing wrong with strumming chords, rock bands do it all the time (to my dismay). Go Steely Dan.

My cousin plays guitar and he also goes from picking to strumming..it depends how the song is suppose to sound..my cousin sometimes strums with his hands because he wants the sound to be more softer rather than the pick where its more enhanced..it depends on the song really..or whichever you prefer..

It depends on your style and what kind of sound you're after but you can pick and strum with both fingers and/or plekky.
If you're just learning, stick to one or the other. There is a ton of other stuff to worry about before you get into style, tone, phraing, etc.
Good luck (and good choice of instrument!)

If I'm playing a song where I know I'll need to go back and forth, I play with a thumbpick (I use a Herco medium). They take a little getting used to, but they pay off is big.
