People are called Mexican-American and so on in America also..If I moved to a different country..I'd be a African-American living in that country then..

No big deal at all. I see people as people regardless of race and color. I respect people of all races and if you like I will call you an African American. I guess some people are hung up on race and color and are afraid of saying something that might offend some one with a different color skin. I don't care what people call me. I have been called a cracker. lol. By the way if you look anything like your avatar, you are very pretty. Peace out baby.

I don't live in the US so I can't say from an American perspective. However if 'Black people' are African-Americans then should others be called German-American, Swedish-Amercian, English-American......... that is, based upon their ancestry regardless of how far back that goes. Surely you are Americans first and foremost so why be so specific as to preface that with 'African'?
This may be a naive view from afar, but it just seems the most logical way to go.
Regards.

I'm going to answer your question but first off I mean no offence. To be honest with you I am not against calling Black people African-American it just seems like every time I use the term in the presence of an African-American I'm told that that's not want they want to be called. I don't want to offend anyone so I'm kind of intimated about what I should them. Does that make sense? Please don't take any offence.

Why are so many against just being called black? I get called white, I don't care. It's the cheesy political correctness I think that frustrates most I think. I know I don't call them "african americans"

What about Black people from other countries? Do they want to be called African-Jamaicans, etc? And if they migrate from Jamaica to American then are they African-Jamaican-American? I'm not trying to be a smart *** and I try to refer to people in their preferred manner, but it can get challenging to figure out the appropriate reference. If a Black person doesn't have a strong tie to their African heritage then they don't necessarily identify themselves in that manner.

I'm not against it at all, personally. However, I have had African Americans roll their eyes at me when I've used that term. I've even had some tell me "I'm not African American, I'm black." It's hard to know what to do.
