The internal gas pressure increases and it gets hot. Depending upon the amount of squeezing force that you apply, and the type of gas that it is, the gas may even explode. Certain gases are called "inert." Those gases resist any kind of ignition or oxidation because their outer ring of electrons in the atomic structure is completely filled, and the atom is therefore said to be very stable. You may find these stable or inert gases on the right side of the Atomic Chart. See Helium, Argon, Neon as examples.

Hydrogen gas, however, is located over on the left side of the Atomic Chart. It is most exciteable and easily subject to explosion/oxidation. Hydrogen is an example of one of the gases which do not have their outer electron shell completely filled. Hydrogen's atomic number is "1" and therefore has one electron in its outer shell and one proton in its neucleus. The innermost electron shells in atoms can hold a maximum of two electrons, and hydrogen is one electron shy of meeting that happy state. So Hydrogen is always on the lookout for an extra electron it can beg, borrow, or steal from some other element or compound to complete its outer ring (therefore it is volatile as opposed to inert/stable). Other highly active gases may be found on the left side of the Atomic Chart (or Periodic Table).

or it will explode out of the container either as a jet or in all directions at once.
