"Individuality is fine, as long as we all do the same things." Major Burns on M*A*S*H TV show.
I was once accused of trying to be different just to be different. I told them that was a complement.
I'd go to the opera in torn jeans and a t-shirt and to a hippy convention in a tuxedo.

Hey Penny,
People try to be accepted into their immediate society, so to a degree, they are alike. But, they are all individuals with complex variation of genes, family and whatever. So nobody can be like someone else unless both are identical twins.
Cheerleaders, nerds, rockstars... any group will have certain similarities or they can't belong. But each person will stand out within the group, and that may not be clear to an outsider.
Cheers!
Ashok

Individuality is a thing of the past. People are too worries about making great impressions on other people, they often forget who they really are. Everybody wants to be the most beloved, the most social, and the most popular, but more times than not, they sacrifice their self being.
Our society these days makes people believe that they have to be popular. This starts from most of the commercials you see; clothes, shoes, bottled water even.
Most people thin kthat they are socially unacceptable, thats sad isn't it? How can you be happy when you are sacrificing your personality, looks, wants and needs to satisfy others? In my opinion, individuality is long gone, and it don't look like it is coming back anytime soon.

peer pressure. Some people are afraid of being individuals because they want to belong. Individuality requires a strong personality capable of taking criticism. Some can and some cannot. Those that can, will do their own thing. Those that cannot, will succumb to peer pressure and lose their individuality.

Good question. It seems so many people, try to be and act like something that they're not, just because they don't want to be seen as an outcast. Each person, has some sort of uniqueness about them, but because they're afraid of what others may say, they won't let that uniqueness, shine through. Be yourself and have some dignity.

all of you got it wrong. I have been studying this question in college. No one can stand out in this world as an individual, its impossible. The idea is that from when you are a child growing up, the people you encounter (siblings, parents, friends, school teachers, employers) all shape who you are. Namely friends and parents. I am the type of person who dresses preppy and in style, and I hang out with people who dress the same way, why... because I am most comfortable around people like that and those are the type of people I have hung out with all my life.
Heres a good example. Gothic people, the people who wear extremely baggy jeans, everythings black and they wear makeup. To some one like me, that is a style that stands out. But its not individual. Cause some one who dresses gothic didnt decide when they were one day old that they were going to be goth. They decided to start dressing that way when they started hanging out with kids who dress that way. IE: friends influence the shape of each person.
A gothic person to me might seem like an individual and stand out to me. But in the gothic persons group of friends, none of them stand out, the way they dress and act is a norm to them.

What an aswesome question/great insight! Fortune 1,000 companies everywhere try to tell us how we should feel, think, look, act . . . as you can see, they've been TERRIBLY successful! As such, we have a world that is becoming increasingly similar . . . culture as we know it is becoming homogenized.
Travel and enjoy the world! But make it quick!

That's not true. Individually is very important. it's what makes you stand out. I wouldn't want to be the same as everyone else.

I don't know why people want to be like me.
It's really annoying, actually.
But I can see why, because I'm just amazing.
It's really flattering to see everyone mimic me.
