It stands for Kilo, the latin word for 1000.

Kilogram (1000 grams)
Kilometer (1000 meters)
$20K ( $20,000)

Kilo means thousand. Just like a KILOmeter is 1,000 meters (a meter is a little more than 3 feet).

Just to let you know that Kevin J has it right when he said "K" means "kilo",or 1,000. All prefixes above 1 (10 to the power of 0_ are :Latin bases; all prefixes below are Greek

Kilo or Thousand. 10K would be 10,000. 1K would be 1,000. I believe it is Latin, but not sure.
