I would suggest going to Holland and Saugatuck. Saugatuck has really good stores to go to and Holland is a Dutch community much like Frankenmuth is a German community. It is a good tourist town. Saugatuck does have the nicest beach in Michigan also. Holland has Holiday Inn Express, Holiday Inn, Fairfield Inn, and several other hotels. Holiday Inn Express would be like $100 per night if you had, say, 3 adults in the room. Holiday Inn has rates you could get for $70 per night. As for restaurants in Holland, Crazy Horse Steakhouse and Saloon has good ratings. It is moderately priced and has received good reviews. Pereddies also is highly rated. I dont know if I would suggest Benton Harbor, it isn't too safe of a community. They had really bad riots there a few years ago. Grand Haven is more of a ritzy community and Muskegon is alright to go to. I've been to Holland a few times and thought it was nice.

The Renaissance Festival is in Holly on weekends until Oct. 1. In the Paw Paw area you have to try the winerys (Tabor Hill, St. Julian, Warner). There are tons of lighthouses on West side of the state. There is a restaurant in St. Joseph at the edge of town that overlooks the beach called Schu's. This place has good food at a reasonable price with great atmosphere. There are lots of art things in St. Joseph too. The Ramada in Benton Harbor wan't bad the last time I was there and it was in a great location for ease of traveling to other places.
Muskegeon has a horse racetrack. Even if you aren't into gambeling, it is a fun thing to experience.
Also try the website for things to do in Western Michigan.

Meijer Botanical Garden in Grand Rapids is a must see. It is becoming quite famous. Grand Haven has the best pizza place in Michigan: The Glover Bar. It is off the beaten path. Ask the locals. For color, they should really drive above Muskegon, as the trees are turning a bit further north. The Whitehall area is beautiful. In Grand Rapids, The Grand Rapids Brewing Co., with it's 100-year old tradition is a good eat. As your other answers indicate, Holland is nice, but it taks about 1 hours to see it. Saugatuck is the place for art. However, I would still stick with making it to Grand Rapids: Meijer Gardens, Ford Museum, and unique shops in areas like Gaslight Village, East Hills area (antiques), and downtown for restaurants.

I've been raking my brain to come up with good things to suggest, but am coming to a loss. I grew up in Muskegon! If it is still open, the Doo Drop Inn on Henry St. is a good family restaurant. A ride to the lake and along the channel would kill some time. You could watch the ferry leave for Milwaukee or come back depending upon the time of day. Also Mona Lake is a nice small inland lake at the end of Getty St & Rt 31.

pretty much agree with Nate except for Lodging you can stay in Holland much cheaper than Saugatuck and only 10/15 min drive from one to the other. You have the entire coast line and related cities to explore, with many little unique places to eat and shop. Very artsy in Saugatuck and can be pricey as well so unless you are prepared to spend money and just want to spend your time site seeing take Blue Star Highway south along the Lake Michigan coast from Holland. Lots of antique stands this time of the year. It is also big fruit and harvest time with peaches, apples and roadside stores and bakeries open and in full gear. We are planning trips to that area over the next two weekends to camp and love it.

Don't forget Kalamazoo! There's some museums and it's where the indie film Kalamazoo? was made!!
They've got a beautiful downtown area, gorgeous historical neighborhoods, even houses designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It's right near Battle Creek where you can go to the Zoo, see Cereal City, tour an aviation museum and more!
Beautiful parks in K'Zoo & Battle Creek too!
I grew up in TR just south of K'Zoo, nice area!

My husband is from Michigan.
Ride the trains!
Ride the rails in restored vintage passenger cars! Themed trains include the Bunny Train, Veteran's Day Memorial Troop Train, Great Train Robbery, Pumpkin and Santa Trains! Conductors share local history and train information on Wednesday and Saturday "non-themed" trains.
They also have a farm museum, and a light house museum.
