Warm milk contains the amino acid tryptophan (also present in turkey). Though I don't know the mechanism, I know that these have a so-called "soporific" effect on the brain when they are metabolized. Why it might not work for some is an interesting question as well...

I used to have trouble sleeping and someone suggested drinking warm milk at bedtime, and it worked. After I drank it, I was so tired from throwing up that I went right to sleep.

My reasoning is that it was what you were fed as a baby, and baby's sleep most of the time, so your brain relates the act of drinking warm milk with sleep.

Triptophan is the reason milk and that yummy thanksgiving turkey put people to sleep.

Because milk has an acid called tryptophan. But what's weird is that tryptophan is in chocolate too, but all chocolate does is make me hyper.

when milk is warmed, it releases a component called tryptophan. check it out... :)
