They are more confused than afraid: There is nothing over the course of their evolutionary development that "explains" this multi-pronged item. They do not have the mental capacity to deal with this new object, in the context of this two-legged odd creature (the lion tamer) waving it at them. Also, the tamer is always in the training cage first: the lions are hierarchical, and accept that the man with the weird four pronged thing (chair) "owns" the territory. The chair is only a part of the situation that the tamer is producing to make them back down and not be aggressive.

I think they are more afraid of the crazy man who is ballsy enough to use just a kitchen chair to fend off a lion.
