Man, some people scare me these days....

A whole pizza =12 slices.

By the time Austin got to it, only 5/12's were left, so someone had already eaten 7 pieces...(5+7=12).

So if Austin ate 3/12's of a whole pizza, that's 3 pieces, leaving 2 leftover pieces.

2/12 is = to 1/6, so the correct answer can be either 2 pieces, or 1/6th of the whole pizza.

Did Austin eat 3/12ths of a whole different pizza? If so, 9/12ths are left from his pizza, and 7/12ths are left from the first. If not, 1/3 of a pizza is left over.

1 (a whole pizza) - 5/12 = 7/12
7/12 - 3/12 = 4/12 = 1/3 of a pizza
