What ever you do, warm up first, and do some reps with increasing weights first. Don't start your workout by cranking at your maximum weight - that's asking for trouble!
Then, work up to a few sets of 6 repetitions at your maximum weight to build muscle mass - OR - do sets of about 20 repetitions at a moderate weight in order to build strength. These 2 goals require different workouts.
And you should always be in control of the weights. If you're shaking like a leaf... you're asking for trouble.
Also, don't excersise the same muscle groups more than 2 or 3 times a week. During your workout, you're actually damaging your muscles. You grow stronger because your muscles recover to 'better than before' during rest days.

Your arms will shake because you haven't developed the stabilizer muscles yet in that exercise. The motion is unnatural to you as a beginner, and its totally normal to shake. This will probably go away in a month (assuming you do this exercise 2-3 times a week). You probably won't be able to bench your bodyweight for a little while. Just lift a weight that you can rep 8-10 times and do 3 to 4 sets. Add about 5-10 pounds each week for a steady strength/endurance gain. You will eventually plateau and will not be able to increase the weight. By then I'm sure you will find some more advanced methods to take you further.

p.s. the reason you should go for 8-10 reps instead of less is to get those stablilizer muscles formed and get your technique conditioned. Then after a year or two you should be able to do heavy lifts and like 2-3 reps for size/strength. Don't use steroids unless you want to get injured and die from heart failure.

You should be able to bench press your own weight, if you lift heavy, only work out 3 times a week and that gives your body time to recuperate.

if you are just starting off, you need to start at a low weight, its tough, you won't be able to lift your own weight for a while. Good luck with it though, and be careful
