I understand that there is emotional pain in sex but how bad is the physical pain?

If you think there is going to be emotional pain, then you shouldn't worry about the physical pain because you shouldn't be having sex in the first place. This is how teenage pregnancies occur - teens have sex before they know anything about it and believe rumors they've heard like "you can't get pregnant your first time," etc.

If there is physical pain my guess is you need to remove the football equipment especially the helmet. I mean, how do you kiss properly with that thing on?

It does not have to be painful at all. If you have a tender caring partner who takes their time and you use a lubricant if it your first time, the experience can and should be positive and enjoyable.
That is assuming that you are old enough and emotionally secure enough to not be rigid with fear.
