Maybe the mic is not on, or you didn't activate the audio conversation. That's the two main problems that can happen... I don't know else

Go to Yahoo! Messenger, open your contacts list, click on Messenger, then click Preferences, then click Audio Video Setup and then make sure you have the correct audio card selected, and then click on Call Setup and go through those steps.
Obviously your mic is working, since you get each other's voice mails
but, maybe not in the Messenger IM window.

first make sure you equipment is working. to check this goto start>programs> accesories>entertainment>voice recorder.
record some stuff through your mic and see if tis working. tell your daughter to do the smae on her comp. Try turning off windows firewall or anyother firewall if you guys have any.
