I guess it depends where he's from: Southwestern desert, African desert, Middle Eastern desert...even Anctartica is, technically speaking, a desert. It would probably be best to think regionally, or perhaps use something from a language spoken in the area.

here is a list of deserts at this link take your pick, I reckon Gibson's not bad or Gobi or even Barchan which is a type of sandune.That's assuming you don't like Sandy which seems the obvious one.
