why might hte contents of rhe barge have been smaller when it returned than when it first left New York?

its real vauge question , maybe they unloaded it ? maybe they consumed fuel on the trip and there for weighs less . its a real vauge question > I personally would answer it with another question .......too many unexplained variables at play .......

Perhaps because it was exporting goods from New York, and for an inexplicable reason was not going to import anything from its destination... although the US is *not* very big on imports, considerably more on exports.
