I divorced a guy like that. He couldn't tell me why he did it either. But it eventually escalated into him having an affair, and the woman had thought we hadn't been married for a year. He even lied to both of us in the same room thinking he could lie his way out of it.
Hopefully your guy can get a hold on this before and stop before his whole life is a lie.
Good luck! :)
And please keep in mind a marrige should be built on trust.

Well, if this is just a deception to conceal the birthday party from her, a surprise, then no harm or foul.

However, if the anyone lies when the truth would work as well or better - then you have to ask why? Why lie, and how can you believe anyone that is a chronical liar? How can you ever trust what they say?

I wouldn't marry a man ... period.

However, in the context of your question, I would consider very carefully what makes people tell "harmless" lies. Sometimes, it's just to liven up the story (...we beat up six of the HUGEST guys you've ever seen), sometimes it's to hide some minor twinge of guilt (my guy friend [instead of my female friend]), sometimes it's just so natural, that they don't even know they're doing it.

Unfortunately, some people - albeit very few - are just compulsive liars. Just remind him, or ask him a few times if the answer isn't exaggerated or obfuscated.

How long have you known this person? There could be many reason why he lies about "harmless" things, but the fact that he lies at all should concern you. If you're really serious about him, then maybe you should go to a couple counseling sessions and see what's really going on.. he could have issues of all sorts.

Don't even consider marrying him! If he would lie about harmless things, what else would he lie about? RUN!

No, I wouldn't marry someone that lies or even be in a relationship at all with someone who lies. If there is no truth there is no relationship, and this is especially true in marriage.

No. After a while liars forget what they lied about and it comes back and bites them in the As*

a liar is a liar , they don't change if they will lie about one thing , they will lie about another & the truth is not in them.
