It's always I'm mixed with this or that. I am black and I find it funny. It's one thing if you are biracial, but to reach back to your great, great, great, great whomever to say you are mixed with something else is crazy! What's wrong with just being black? I have a great grandparent on both sides that was white and my grandmother was 1/2 Native American, but it's silly to say all that when I am primarily black. Even when I read magazines about celebrities, it's so and so is 1/8 whatever. Seems silly. Where is the pride in just being black???

2good4hem: I am not saying that I say "I am 100% black." I don't mention percentages, nor am I not proud of any aspect of my heritage. Aren't most people mixed with something else? It just looks like people aren't proud of what they are, and everyone, no matter what they are should be proud.

I personally am very proud of being just black and for the most part i am. However there isnt a day that does not go by when someone of all races will ask me where i from. I tell them that i am a native floridian and they are surprised because they assume that i am from some island. I dont get what about me that screams island girl. i have a regular american accent and i have average looks. I dont know why the african american community feels the need to announce their lineage all the time because it sure as hell isnt getting them rich or anything.

I think your exactly right, but it is probably the labeling of a race and who is doing the labeling that sets people off. Some white guy decides we're gonna call this group of people Black or this group Hispanic. Well if I was Black or Hispanic I would not want anyone from outside my race categorizing me in a specific group, but that was done a long time ago when whites were trying to run everything. It is still going to take some time before people just start referring to people as people.

It sounds as though the underlying assumption in your statement is that people who identify themselves as more ethnically diverse than just black, are not taking pride in being black.
1) You can be proud of more than just one ethnic or racial heritage.
2) Being proud of more than just one does not necessarily make one less proud of another.
I happen to be a little bit of everything. I figure humans have been traveling this world, raping, pillaging, intermarrying etc for thousands of years and there is no such thing as "a pure race" (Also, race is a socially constructed concept, not so much biological. There are variations of skin color to fill every gap in the skin color spectrum all the way from albino up to black and purple. Interested to hear more about this? use a search engine to look up "the social construction of race")
Just some thoughts.

Because we blacks in America have been taught to hate ourselves. It's so bad that being mixed with ANYTHING is better than being 100% ni**er. Even if the great to the umpteenth power relative was 1/4 something else. So so sad.

Im 60%white,20%black and 20%other.I understand what you are saying.Im very lightskinned and some people even think im white.I never tell people that im white.Like I dont understand how somebody like beyonce, naomi campbell or any other black celebrities are considered mixed.Like naomi campbell is considered mixed but they said she is like 1/8 or 1/16 chinese. If she is considered mixed than all the real mixed kids should be considered white.

Ur logic seems to be anal. If people want to state all of the nationalities from their background they are entitled to do that. How do u know that they are not proud of all of those heritages? What gives u the right to judge anybody, if u r content with just saying that u r 100% black that is ur right, so why shouldn't it be their right also? We could also u why r so content with just being black and not acknowledging your other heritages?

I really don't think anyone can honestly say they are comfortable in their skin. It isn't just black people. I mean white people are always trying to get a tan to look darker and ect... So, I don't think it is just black people. We all should be happy with our roots and be happy where we came from. And we should all be nice to each other regardless of race. Just my two cents worth!

I don't see why this bothers other people, you know maybe they are just as proud of their other heritages as they are in being black.

Apparently its offensive to be proud of one single race nowdays. I mean, who ever says they're simply proud of being white either?

Most black in America are mixed as I am. I simply relate more to the black part of me since that is where Americans pigeon hole me and that is the part of me that I most relate to.
