Where does the term "redneck" come from?

typically--people in rural areas worked outside, bent over harvesting, etc. And as they worked, they got sunburned over and over till they had permanent red necks. Redneck became a term for someone who is not sophisticated or highly educated because farmers, field workers, known by their red necks, typically had minimal schooling.

its always been demeaning, it came from older days when it was fashionable to have fair white skin so those ppl who worked and got their necks burned were considered to be dirt because they weren't a part of the social elite and couldn't afford to buy people to do work for them.
